Drought

Drought occurs when there has been a water shortage for some time. Drought is caused by lack of rainfall.

Water consumption and water use must be reduced during times of drought, when water supplies will be low.

The UK is currently experiencing drought due to a shortage of water. The last 18 months have been the driest since 1922.

The South-East of the Uk is the worst affected area. Most counties are considered to be ‘notably low’ in water supply, one is deemed ‘exceptionally low’ and a several

are ‘below normal’.

Drought impacts on wildlife, nature, and people’s everyday lives:

  • Shortage of water can have an adverse impact on wildlife. The RSPB say that Winter flooding is needed to attract swans and other wildfowl to our washes. Due to water

scarcity, the numbers of wildfowl in our washes has dropped. This could have a longer term impact on our eco-system, as everything has a knock-on effect.

  • Water shortage affects nature: our rivers and washes are drying up.

  • Water scarcity impacts on our everyday life too: a hose-pipe ban and advice to limit water use in bathing and other uses around the home affects our day to day life.

Facts about Water

  • The South-East of the UK currently has a problem with water supply - we don’t have enough water due to lack of rainfall. The Environment Department (Defra) announced

a state of drought in February 2012. This led to a  hose-pipe ban in March 2012.

  • Drought can reduce water quality, as lower water flows reduce the amount that pollutants in the water are diluted by. This can increase the contamination of water

    sources.

Global Water Shortage

Governments across the world are thinking about ways to address the problems created by the current global water shortage. These include ways of providing billions of poor

people with clean water, decent sanitation, and ways to address spiralling demands for water supply in the future.
